OPSWAT global Antivirus Market Share Report highlights impact of Malwarebytes’ for the first time

Worldwide research into 6000 users finds:

  • MBAM Free has second highest number of total installs, behind only Microsoft
  • MBAM Pro is the seventh most popular real time protection software
  • 93% of all Malwarebytes software run alongside other AV products

San Jose January 29, 2014 — Worldwide research published today by IT and Infrastructure Management company, OPSWAT, highlights for the first time the impact of Malwarebytes Anti Malware on the antivirus market.

The new report reveals that Malwarebytes’ Free product is the second most installed product, when those not providing real-time protection are taken into account.  Only Microsoft Security Essentials, which comes free as part of the Windows OS, has a higher number of total installs, with over 25% market share.

When real-time protection is taken into account, Malwarebytes PRO also claims a significant market share. The software, which features proactive protection against the latest malicious threats, is installed by more users than popular paid-for products such as AVG Internet Security, Kaspersky Internet Security, McAfee VirusScan, Norton360 and Avast! Internet Security.

The analysis also discovered that 93% of all systems running Malwarebytes did so in conjunction with an additional antivirus product, whereas only 23.7% of all other antivirus was used in this manner.  This indicates it is used to provide supplementary protection against the threats missed by traditional anti-virus.

The OPSWAT Antivirus Market Share Report seeks to gauge the competitive status of the market by comparing which antivirus solutions are installed on 6000 Windows endpoints using the company’s  GEARS  technology.   Given the nature of the research tool, the analysis typically takes into account technically advanced users.

Marcin Kleczynski, CEO and Founder of Malwarebytes, said, “OPSWAT’s reports are well thought of in the antivirus industry as they provide a valuable snapshot of market share. For Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free to feature as the second most installed product worldwide, behind software which comes preinstalled in the Operating System, is hugely exciting.

“The data which shows that the vast majority of Malwarebytes’ users are doing so in conjunction with another AV product is also heartening.  The team has worked very hard to build products that are compatible with our competitors, whilst also protecting against the threats they miss, so it’s good to see our approach gaining traction.”
