{"id":2588,"date":"2019-11-19T05:00:26","date_gmt":"2019-11-19T13:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/press\/?p=2588"},"modified":"2023-09-21T13:36:37","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T13:36:37","slug":"coalition-against-stalkerware-organizations-working-against-domestic-violence-join-forces-with-it-security-companies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/press\/2019\/11\/19\/coalition-against-stalkerware-organizations-working-against-domestic-violence-join-forces-with-it-security-companies","title":{"rendered":"Coalition Against Stalkerware: Organizations working against domestic violence join forces with IT Security companies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>New global\nworking group will combine expertise for victim support and cybersecurity to\nhelp affected users<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">November 19, 2019: Today, ten organizations \u2013 Avira, Electronic Frontier Foundation, European Network for the Work with Perpetrators of Domestic Violence, G DATA Cyber Defense, Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, National Network to End Domestic Violence, NortonLifeLock, Operation Safe Escape and WEISSER RING \u2013 have launched a global initiative called the Coalition Against Stalkerware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is\nstalkerware?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stalkerware\nprograms carry the possibility for intrusion into a person\u2019s private life and\nare being used as a tool for abuse in cases of domestic violence and stalking.\nBy installing these apps, abusers can get access to their victim\u2019s messages,\nphotos, social media, geolocation, audio or camera recordings (in some cases,\nthis can be done in real-time). Such programs run hidden in the background,\nwithout a victim\u2019s knowledge or consent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For some\nyears, the problem of \u2018stalkerware\u2019 has been on the rise. Non-profit\norganizations are experiencing a growing number of victims seeking help with\nthe problem. According to Kaspersky, the number of users facing stalkerware\nrose by 35%, from 27,798 in 2018 to 37,532 in 2019.\nThe\nthreat landscape for stalkerware has also widened, as Kaspersky has detected 380\nvariants of stalkerware in the wild in 2019 \u2013 31% more than a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until now,\nthere was neither an agreed-upon standard definition for stalkerware nor\ndetection criteria which made it particularly difficult for the IT security\nindustry to communicate around the issue. With this in mind, the founding\nmembers of the Coalition Against Stalkerware have taken the important step of\ncreating a proper definition and reaching a consensus on detection criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>StopStalkerware.org<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coalition\nhas also launched an online portal, www.stopstalkerware.org,\nwith the goal of helping victims, facilitating knowledge transfer among\nmembers, developing best practices for ethical software development and\neducating the public about the dangers of stalkerware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key objective\nof the website is to provide a helpful online resource for victims of\nstalkerware. Users will find information on what stalkerware is, what it can\ndo, and, most importantly, how to protect themselves.\nThe\nwebsite lists common indicators to check if a user thinks they may have become\na victim of stalkerware, and what steps they should and should not take. For\nexample, it is important to consider whether removing stalkerware could\npotentially cause more harm, as the abuser will be informed immediately by the\napp, or it could erase evidence critical to a law enforcement investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For potentially affected users, the Coalition Against Stalkerware recommends immediately contacting a local victim service organization or a law enforcement agency to help provide victim safety measures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Stalkerware,\nused for spying on phones and computers in domestic abuse or harassment\nsituations, is a very serious problem, and it often goes hand-in-hand with\nother forms of abuse, up to and including physical violence. The ubiquity of\nstalkerware is a complex problem and we need stakeholders from all parts of\nsociety in order to fight it effectively.&#8221; &#8211; <strong>Eva Galperin, Director of\nCybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStudies have shown\nthat 70% of women victims of cyberstalking also experienced at least one form\nof physical or\/and sexualised violence from an intimate partner. We need to\nstop perpetrators from using their partners\u2019 phones for stalking and hold them\naccountable for their violence. The Coalition Against Stalkerware enables us to\nbring our knowledge on gender-based violence and perpetrators to IT security\ncompanies \u2013 so we can work together towards ending violence against women and\ngirls perpetrated via new technologies.\u201d &#8211;<strong> Anna McKenzie, Communications\nManager at the European Network for the Work with Perpetrators of Domestic\nViolence (WWP EN)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor\nyears, Malwarebytes has detected and warned users about the potentially\ndangerous capabilities of stalkerware, an invasive threat that can rob\nindividuals of their expectation of, and right to privacy.
