Malwarebytes found that the majority of people feel increasingly vulnerable to privacy violations from corporations (89%), governments (72%), AI tools (89%), and scammers. The research shines a spotlight on the dire need for better privacy protections in an era where individuals feel isolated in securing their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/cybersecurity\/basics\/pii\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personal sensitive information<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/blog\/news\/2025\/04\/72-of-people-are-worried-their-data-is-being-misused-by-the-government-and-thats-not-all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Read the full research findings<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cData is power; and we are too often asked to give up our power in today\u2019s digital landscape,\u201d said Marcin Kleczynski, CEO and Founder, Malwarebytes. \u201cThe survey results underline the urgency for stronger, more transparent privacy laws alongside education to help consumers understand their rights and actions they can take to safeguard their personal data and identity.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key findings from the Malwarebytes privacy concerns survey include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>89% <\/strong>of respondents are concerned about their personal data being used inappropriately by corporations.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>72%<\/strong> are similarly worried about government access to their data without consent.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>77%<\/strong> of people feel that many online transactions are designed to collect their personal data.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>89%<\/strong> expressed concern about AI tools using their data without permission.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>60%<\/strong> of people are concerned their phone is listening to their conversations and targeting ads at them.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>70%<\/strong> of people feel resigned that their personal data is already out there, and they can\u2019t get it back.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These findings are further exacerbated by recent high-profile incidents, such as the UK government requesting Apple\u2019s access to encrypted cloud data, the release of documents revealing exposed Social Security numbers, and the bankruptcy of genetic testing company 23andMe, prompting customers to delete their data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As trust in traditional privacy safeguards wanes, many people are taking matters into their own hands to protect their personal information. Malwarebytes discovered that:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>40% of respondents<\/strong> stopped using platforms like Instagram, TikTok, or X (formerly Twitter) to safeguard their data.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>26%<\/strong> abandoned fertility or period-tracking apps due to privacy concerns.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>75%<\/strong> actively opt out of data collection whenever possible.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>23%<\/strong> use a personal data removal service to help clean up any data that is easily found online.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;While privacy challenges may seem overwhelming, the survey results demonstrate that many individuals are not giving up on securing their personal information,\u201d said Mark Beare, GM of the consumer business unit, Malwarebytes. \u201cThis is a powerful reminder that, even in the face of increasing privacy invasions, there remains hope \u2013 and tangible actions people can take \u2013 for the future of online security.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to Protect Personal Data<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Make sure your social media accounts are set to private. <\/strong>You\u2019ve likely shared photos and info about you and your family over the years. Make sure your accounts are locked down.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use fake, \u201cdummy data\u201d wherever you can: <\/strong>In some places, like medical facilities, you do need to use real data. But whenever you\u2019re signing up for something less official, try using dummy data.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Review privacy settings on your apps:<\/strong> Keep things as private as you can. For example, don\u2019t use real photos for profile pictures, remove statuses that let others know when you or your children are online, set as much as possible to \u201cprivate,\u201d and give the least amount of personally identifiable information (eg. home address, phone number, etc.) as you can.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keep your devices updated and use <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/premium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>security software<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>Stop known and unknown viruses and scams. Also use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/browserguard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">browser extension<\/a> to block phishing sites and malicious sites that often host infostealers. Infostealers are a type of malware that silently steals data from your device. This data can then be sold on the dark web to identity thieves.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Set up <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/identity-theft-protection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>identity monitoring<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>This alerts you if you or your family\u2019s information is being traded online, and helps you recover afterwards.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Understand your risk: <\/strong>Malwarebytes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/digital-footprint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digital Footprint Scanner<\/a> reveals what information is publicly exposed so you can make sure to change passwords and remove information.
