Your Guide to Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI isn’t exactly new. The idea goes all the way back to the mid-1900s, when the term artificial intelligence” was first coined. Google started experimenting with AI in the early 2000s, weaving it into its search engine to make results smarter and faster. But it wasn’t until 2022, when ChatGPT hit the scene, that AI really exploded into the mainstream. Since then, AI—especially generative AI—has found its way into almost everything we use: browsers, email, phones, and even our social media feeds.

AI technology can improve our everyday lives but also carries a risk of becoming a powerful tool in the hands of bad actors. What exactly is AI, and how can you stay safe from cybercriminals using it?

Understanding AI in cybersecurity

AI represents both risks and opportunities in the cybersecurity industry. From optimizing and scaling cyberattacks to improving threat monitoring, response, and automated defense systems, AI is reshaping how we approach digital security.

AI at Malwarebytes

We’ve been using AI for years to supercharge and refine our detections creating unmatched protection from both known and unknown threats. We also lead in identifying and blocking evasive malware because of our AI-powered engines.

We’re leveraging large language models (LLMs) and the general knowledge of the internet to mine for new malware traits and techniques, fueling even better real-time protection across our products. We also use this technology in our SMS text filter to identity suspicious concepts, such as romance themes, providing an additional layer of detection and protection.

We are using AI across the business to drive scale, boost productivity, enhance protections, and demystify cybersecurity for users, but we do this carefully with humans in the loop every step of the way.

We’re keeping our eye on tomorrow and continue to innovate to stay ahead of cybercriminals using AI in new and inventive ways.

How to stay safe from AI-driven threats

AI-powered scams and cyber threats have become a daily reality, costing people more than $16 billion a year, according to IC3. Gone are the days when it was easy to spot a scam.

Ready access to Generative AI tools and AI processing has made it very easy for criminals to create personalized scams that target thousands of individuals. Many of these scams or threats also leverage deepfake audio, video or images, sparking a desire to respond quickly if targeted

S

Slow down: Don’t let urgency or pressure push you into action. Take a breath before responding. Legitimate businesses like your bank or credit card don’t push immediate action.

T

Test them: If you answered the phone and are feeling panicked about the situation, likely involving a family member or friend, ask a question only the real person would know—something that can’t be found online.

O

Opt out: If it feels off, hang up or end the conversation. You can always say the connection dropped.

P

Prove it: Confirm the person is who they say they are by reaching out yourself through a trusted number, website, or method you have used before.

We’re still on the forefront of the AI revolution.
